Elon Musk announces ‘Solar Roof’ product, Tesla/SolarCity will go after the roof industry

<p><b id="docs-internal-guid-8583254d-75b0-37bc-6074-62131bc67655"></b></p><p><span id="selectionBoundary_1470853306852_7638017800460997">﻿</span>Tesla CEO Elon Musk hopped on SolarCity’s earnings call Tuesday night, which is unusual for the Chairman, but understandable considering the impending deal for Tesla to acquire the solar installer. </p><p><br/></p><p>During the call, Musk announced that SolarCity will unveil a “solar roof” as opposed to “solar modules on a roof. He added, “I think this is really a fundamental part of achieving differentiated product strategy, where you have a beautiful roof. It’s not a thing on the roof. It is the roof.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Musk sees a “huge” market for roofs nearing their end of life.</p><p><br/></p><p>SolarCity CEO Lyndon Rive said that there are 5 million new roofs installed every year in the US. Homeowners with old roofs tend not to install solar panels, since they know they'll have to rip everything off before long, but if the solar panels are the roof and you need to redo it anyway, there’s no reason not to go with a power-generating roof. </p><p><br/></p><p>Neither Tesla nor SolarCity are in the black yet, but both companies figure prominently in Musk’s recently updated “master plan.” That plan envisions introducing two new Tesla vehicles: a heavy-duty truck known as the Semi, and a high-passenger-density urban transit vehicle.</p><p><br/></p><p>And as if Musk didn’t have enough on his plate, he’s due to unveil SpaceX’s master plan for sending colonists to Mars next month during the International Astronautical Congress in Mexico.</p><p><br/></p><h5>Thank you to our friends at <i>Electrek</i> for providing the original article below.<span id="selectionBoundary_1470853306852_9481841342656301">﻿</span></h5>
